A. Before the first preop examination you have to be without soft contact lenses for at least one week and without GP contact lenses for three weeks.

B. Before the treatment you should not wear soft lenses for four days. It's also advisable not to wear hard lenses after the preop examination. This is agreed among the doctors. You will receive a paper with instructions, a brochure, a CD ROM (Lasik, The Patiënts Info) and an "Informed Consent" which needs to be filled out and brought with you on the day of treatment.

C. Contact lens wear after Lasik surgery is possible, although this is not the intended result.

A. Both eyes are treated in one session unless great deviations are present and unless there is a medical contra-indication. In that case both eyes are treated with one week interval.

B. The treatment is always carried out with the assistance of an application-engineer. The laser is tested before each treatment. For each eye a new blade is used.
You are being assisted by two nurses and a secretary.

C. Small eye movements are being filtered by the tracking system (speed 250/second) of the Mel 80 Laser

D. The treatment will last about 6 minutes per eye. The treatment is not painful. At the maximum you will feel pressure on the eye. After the treatment the eye may remain sensitive and there may be some tearing for 2 hours. Including the preparation you have to foresee a stay of 2 hours for the treatment.
After the treatment reading may remain difficult for a few days.

E. After the treatment no bandage is applied, you only have to wear a protective shell for one night. Further instructions will be given after the treatment: most of the time you can resume your normal activities one day after the treatment.

F. Aesthetic: exceptionally (one chance out of ten) the eye may be redden until some days after the treatment.

A. In our centre in Antwerp left bank we have been using Excimer Laser surgery since 1990, and Lasik surgery since 1996. Since then Dr. Goes had performed 9000 Laser surgeries, 5000 from these are Lasik.
Customized Ablation using topography-guided ablation, Tosca, or Wavefront Guided Ablation, Wasca, have been applied respectively since 1998 and 2000.

B. The "Goes Eye Centre" is the training centre Worldwide for "Carl Zeiss Meditec AG". Till now Dr. Goes has trained 257 ophthalmologists from 57 different countries in Lasik Excimer Surgery.

C. For more than 7 years Dr. Goes has been and is the International representative for Belgium of the ISRS, "The International Society of Refractive Surgery."

All postoperative controls are executed by doctors that have the experience in the field of Refractive eye-surgery. You will be examined the day after the operation, then one week later, and finally one to three months later. Afterwards you will have to come back every two year.

A. Recently our results were analysed: with a mean myopia of -5 dioptre :100 % of eyes end up between+/- 1D and 94 % between +/- 0.5D and 78% between +/-0,25D of the planned correction.
After a first Lasik treatment 81% of the eyes had an uncorrected acuity of 100% and 99% an uncorrected acuity of 70% at least.

B. We do not always correct the complete astigmatism. We sometimes keep a small amount of astigmatism considering the age and activities of the treated person. To be discussed in the preop examination.

C. The necessity of an extra treatment or "Retouche" is 8%.

D. In case of later changes in refraction of the eye: a new Retreatment will always be possible, a reduced fee will be discussed.

A. The fee for the preop examination and result communication is 140 Euro. If a biometry needs to be executed in case of high myopia or high hypermetropia the fee for the preop examination will be 220 Euro.

B. The fee for lasik surgery with the Mel 80 Zeiss Excimer laser (4th generation) "Spot scanning laser with Active eye tracker Gaussian beam profile with application engineer assistance" is 1500 EURO Each Eye with practically total elimination of HO aberrations.
The examinations in the week following treatment are included in the price. For all later controls you will have to pay about 50 €.

C. If their is a necessity of an extra treatment or "Retouche" this will cost about the paybackrate of the RIZIV in Belgium. If their is no payback of the RIZIV (foreigners) the treatment cost € 250.

D. When a further retreatment is necessary after several years; a reduced fee will be
discussed.

You can always be examined and in most cases be treated within a month.

A. AMADEUS II for EPILASIK
With the Amadeus II Epilasik and Lasek becomes a very safe and painless treatment.

B. Wavefront guided and topolink with the Mel 80
Mel 80 is the only laser which can do Wavefront-guided and Topo-guided treatment. Dr. Goes presented the results on the worldsymposium in Bangkok.

C. Multifocal lenses
Recently Dr. Goes used a multifocal lens which gave excellent visus on short and long distance after treatment of myopia, hyperopia and cataract.
Patients treated with this lens do not need glasses anymore in more than 90% of the cases.

D. Recently Dr Goes disposes of the latest and most modern state of the art lasers the Zeiss MEL 8O Laser, fourth generation. This flying spot laser with a 0,7 mm. spot with Gaussian beam profile, is he fastest laser worldwide and is probably also "the most accurate". Besides that , it is an extremely safe laser; 78% of eyes +/- 0,25 Dptr, 96% of eyes +/- 0,5 Dptr and no eye had lost 2 lines or more visual acuity after treatment. This laser was developed in collaboration with Zeiss Meditec in our Antwerp Centre.
This laser has also a wavefront corrected ablation profile so that very little HO aberrations are induced.

A. Retouche treatment
With a special tool the cap is released again, no extra cutting is needed. Laser treatment and the cap is closed again. A healing lens in placed for about 24 hours.

B. Can the cap open spontaneously?
No the cap can't open spontaneously.

C. Long term what will happen later?
Until now more than 8 million eyes have been treated. If the treatment was succesfully done the eyes behave similar to a normal eyes without treatment.
The normal myopia or hyperopia keeps existing. Eyes with hyperopia will weaken faster than eyes with myopia.
Normal reading problems starting from 45 years of age do not start earlier after Lasik treatment.
