Strabismus (squint)
Occurs in 4% of children. Absence of treatment results in 50% in incurable amblyopia - important weaker eyesight in one eye, insufficient stereoscopic vision and eventually cosmetically disturbing eye-diseases (squint).
Incomplete stereoscopic vision is also a handicap for some professions (aviation, surgery, specialized technology) where perfect stereopia is a must. The treatment of strabismus is different according to the type and degree of the disease.
Exceptionally, the condition disappears spontaneously or with the instillation of drops. In many circumstances spectacles have to be worn by the child temporarily or always :
An amblyopia treatment (occlusion of the better eye or instillation of drops) will become necessary in many cases. In other cases surgery will become unavoidable.
