  Refractive anomalies

Necessitating spectacle wear, occur in 20% of children.

The most frequent anomaly is myopia or shortsightedness. Myopia causes a decrease of the distance vision. It usually manifests itself at age 10-12 years and from then on progresses mostly untill age 18-20.

Hyperopia or farsightedness, is seldom a problem in children, unless it is accompanied by strabismus. Children with hyperopia see better far away then nearby but since children have a well developed and strong accommodation capability, they seldom suffer from the disease unless in extreme circumstances.

Astigmatism, asymmetric or irregular curvature of the cornea (anterior surface of the eye) often necessitates spectacle wear. In pronounced deviations, headache and/or impaired visual acuity may be the outcome.
