With age our body changes and a similar phenomenon happens also in our eye.

Although the population age 65 and more represents only 12% of the population in the U.S.A., we find more than 50% of all blind patients in this population group. The major causes of important decrease of visual acuity above age 65 are glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataract, diabetes and optic nerve atrophy. Besides cardial diseases and rheumatic disorders, a diminished visual acuity is the most important handicap in this age group.

The "Association for Prevention of Blindness" estimates that 50% of the cases of blindness in this group could have been prevented when appropriate measurements would have been taken.
