How is glaucoma detected?
In most cases glaucoma is discovered before there are any complaints: so in a stage that there is an increase in the eye-pressure but not an affection of sight. Especially with elderly people and people whose relatives are glaucoma patients, the ophthalmic surgeon will measure the eye-pressure in order to discover glaucoma in an early stage and to treat it.
Sometimes glaucoma is only discovered when the patient starts complaining about his sight. When there is indeed an increase of the eye-pressure but no further indication for glaucoma, the doctor will check the patient regularly.
In case of an acute rise of the eye-pressure, accompanied by a sudden decrease in sight, the patient's eye may hurt so terrible and he may feel so miserable that he might localize the pain elsewhere, so that glaucoma is not thought of.
