In the USA diabetes is the major cause of new blindness and diabetes patients have a 25 higher risk of major visual problems. Diabetes attacks the small bloodvessels in the retina resulting in retinal hemorrhages and/or retinal edema. It is of great importance that diabetes patients follow their general treatment as strict as possible. Many patients are suitable for Laser treatment when the diagnosis is timely made.

This treatment reduces the risk of important visual loss by more than 50%. Argon laser treatment is done after drop anesthesia. A contactlens is placed on the eye and a varying number of laser spots (50 to 3.000) are placed on the retinal surface and this in function of the necessary treatment. A basic Argon laser treatment of the eye needs three sessions.
