How is the practical course of the operation?

The operation is performed in the Ophthalmic Centre Dr. Frank Goes - Willem Klooslaan 16, 2050 Antwerp, left bank. You should foresee 2 hours, including preparation, measuring and treatment.
Refractive surgery which is completely painless, is done after administration of a drop of a local anaesthetic. The treatment itself lasts only a few minutes.
After the treatment you're not allowed to drive a car as you may have received a sedative and the eye sight will not be 100%.

What is the price of Excimer Laser treatment?

The price is high. The price is determined by the very high purchase price of the apparatus, by the costs of the used gas and materials during each treatment, the need for continuing technical assistance by the service engineers, as well as the maintenance cost and the need for continuing upgrading of the apparatus. In case of an eventual second intervention, because of insufficient result, only the examinations will be charged.

What happens after the treatment with Excimer Laser?

Modern techniques have practically solved the pain problem after refractive eye surgery.
After Lasik Keratotomy as well as after Holmium treatment one has a very good eye sight after 24 hours. This is the only day one has a working incapability. (fig. 17) Lasik treatment is not painful.
After Excimer laser a working incapability of three days is to be foreseen. Afterwards the eye sight will improve progressively. The second eye is treated one to two weeks after the first in cases of Radial keratotomy or Holmium Laser. With Lasik techniques usually both eyes are treated in the same session or the second eye may be treated one or two weeks after the first.

You should keep in mind that the wound-healing and the sight-improvement may take a different course for each patient.

Summary

As in every form of surgery, after refractive surgery, the results are fairly well predictable but there is never a full guarantee.
Further questions and information concerning refractive surgery will be dealt with during the examination.
