Non-surgical treatment of myopia

It has never been proved scientifically that relaxation exercises or eye-drops can improve myopia. Myopia can only be corrected with glasses or lenses or with an operation.
Patients suffering from a minor form of myopia, hypermetropia or astigmatism can very well be helped with glasses. For patients though with a stronger deficiency the glasses are thicker and can deform the image up to 35% (reducing it in case of myopia and enlarging it in case of hypermetropia).

Contact-lenses are preferred by a majority of the younger patients but their disadvantage is that they have to be replaced quite regular and they may cause irritation of the eye. Some contact-lenses can be adapted with a certain technique (orthokaratology) in such a way that the curvature of the cornea is temporarily influenced and flattened, thus diminishing the myopia. This treatment however lasts only for a while and its result is very limited.
