History of the Radial Keratotomy

In Japan in 1936 Dr. Tsutoma Sato was the first to make incisions in the cornea via an internal way in order to reduce the curvature of the eye.
In Russia this technique has been perfected by prof. Fyodorow since 1973, who successfully performed thousands of operations himself. In 1978 Dr. L. Bores brought the technique to the U.S., where it has been further ameliorated.

The technique of Radial Keratotomy

Radial Keratotomy can be performed in the doctor's cabinet. The eye will be anaesthetized with drops. Under strong magnification with a microscope incisions are made in the cornea with a diamond knife. These incisions are made outside the optic centre of the cornea and cause a flattening of the corneal-curvature, thus diminishing the refractive error of the eye.

The length, depth and position of the incisions is determined by the kind of refraction-aberration, the patient's age and sex, the eye-pressure and the form of the eye. The operation is painless and the patient will only feel a pressure in the eye. Since the development of Lasik technique the treatment with radial keratotomie has become an exception.

Professor Fyodorow, who developed radial keratotomy, visited the Antwerp Ophthalmological Center Dr. F. Goes in 1993.
