What can I expect of Refractive Surgery?
The purpose of the operation is NOT that afterwards no correction is needed anymore, but that a correction MIGHT NOT be needed anymore and that in ALL cases there is a clear diminution of the corrective glasses.
The surgical intervention can only partially correct aberrations of myopia, astigmatism and far-sightedness because no patient reacts in the same way.
In the case of serious deviations, myopia cannot be entirely corrected but the result of the intervention is a clear improvement of the image and an extension of the visual field.
With the Excimer Laser, in combination with the Lasik treatment, refractive aberrations up to 10 diopters can be treated for short-sightedness and up to 4 diopters for far-sightedness.
With patients over 40 and young people who have a lot of office-work to do, it is advisable to preserve a slight rate of myopia in order to make reading easier.
With the Holmium Laser hypermetropia till 3D can be treated in one or two sessions in the majority of the cases. Hypermetropia and astigmatism of a higher degree may be improved importantly after treatment. In some cases it is also possible to treat presbyopia till a certain degree with Lasik.
With clear lens extraction all the anomalies of refraction can be treated.
Secondary lens implantation may correct major refractive anomalies of myopia and hyperopia.
'Bioptic treatment' combines different modalities.
